California Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings to California consumers about certain exposures to chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
Proposition 65 is administered by California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, also known as OEHHA. OEHHA maintains the Proposition 65 chemical list, which includes approximately 900 naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals.
These chemicals may be found in a wide range of everyday products and environments, including foods, supplements, household products, electrical cords, plastic materials, fitness accessories, buildings, parking garages, restaurants, and other consumer products or public spaces.
A Proposition 65 warning does not necessarily mean that a product is unsafe or that it violates federal safety standards. It means that the product may expose a California consumer to one or more chemicals listed under Proposition 65, and California law requires a warning so consumers can make informed decisions.
Depending on the product, you may see one of the following warnings:

Not necessarily. Proposition 65 is a California right-to-know law. It is designed to notify California consumers about possible exposure to listed chemicals so they can make informed decisions about their total exposure from all sources. A Proposition 65 warning does not mean a product is banned, illegal, defective, or unsafe when used as directed. It also does not mean the product violates federal safety standards. California’s Proposition 65 warning thresholds can be different from federal and international standards. In some cases, Proposition 65 requires warnings at exposure levels that are significantly lower than levels used by other regulatory agencies.
Proposition 65 is a California law. The warning requirements apply to exposures that occur in California and to products sold to California consumers.

Some listed chemicals may occur naturally in the environment, soil, water, or raw materials. Others may be present in certain plastics, rubbers, foams, neoprene, coatings, or packaging materials.
For example, heavy metals such as lead can occur naturally in soil and may be found in trace amounts in some plant-based, mineral-based, or naturally sourced ingredients. Certain materials used in fitness accessories, such as neoprene or resistance bands, may also require warnings depending on their composition.
